4-Hour Canyon Tour
The Best Way to Experience the Canyon!
The total distance traveled is 32 miles on the canyon floor in a 4x4 vehicle with a guide. The tour includes Antelope House Ruin in Canyon del Muerto and the White House Ruin in Canyon de Chelly along with many other archaeological sites. You may also see Kokopelli Cave, Petroglyph Rock, First Ruin, Junction Ruin, Ceremonial Cave, and Ledge Ruin. The itinerary may change based on the canyon conditions or if guests linger longer than recommended along the tour route.
We know the canyon inside and out, so we can show you the rich archaeology, geology, culture, and history that Canyon de Chelly has to offer. We want to get to know your interests and make your experience an unforgettable one! We can recommend great sites or take your requests. If you would like to keep exploring, we can extend your tour for an additional fee. There are restroom facilities in the canyon.

What to Bring
Backcountry Permit Fee
All passengers must bring $8 per person in cash to pay the Navajo Parks and Rec, debit and credit cards are not accepted. All Backcountry Permits must be signed by the visitor and your authorized guide prior to entering the canyon. There is no entrance fee to the Monument, but a backcountry permit is required.
Gratuity
Gratuity is at your discretion. Guides accept tips in cash.
Water
For your trip into the canyon, bring an ample supply of water — 1-liter per person per hour is not unreasonable in hot weather.
Snacks / Food
Bring your favorites. Area restaurants can prepare sack lunches upon request. A small cooler or lunch bag is recommended to keep your food fresh.
Sunblock / Insect Repellant
Three hours in an open vehicle can burn almost everyone. Most people find it necessary to get the highest rated sunblock they can find, then re-apply the lotion at least once for overall protection.
Brimmed Hat / Umbrella
Even with good sunscreen, visitors often get sunburned. If you are susceptible to sunburn, a brimmed hat or umbrella can help. Sunglasses can help minimize the glare off the white bottom sands. During the summer, we recommend a cooling towel. During cooler temps, bring a warm hat.
Binoculars
General purpose binoculars from small 6x30's to 12x50's will enhance your canyon experience by zooming in on the details on distant walls and ruins. Just remember, the more powerful the magnification, “shaking” will be amplified as well. Small roof prism binoculars are available from Walmart at reasonable prices. 8x30 or 7x35 are good general purpose instruments.
Camera & Film
Digital cameras require mega-pixel imaging to produce photographs with adequate detail. A zoom lens can help.
Light Jacket / Sweater / Rain Coat
During the monsoon, we recommend raincoats. During cooler temps, we recommend dressing in layers and/or bringing a lap blanket.
Cash
You may have the opportunity to purchase jewelry and crafts from Diné artisans in the canyon. NOTE: If you linger longer than recommended browsing artisans, it will detract from your tour time and guides will have to skip sites to stay on time.
For Our Smaller Guests...
Parents of small children and infants need to provide their own infant or child car seats that can be secured with a seat belt. Also, please bring your own container for soiled diapers (zip-lock bags are recommended); which you may dispose of at the conclusion of your tour.
Restroom facilities
Restroom facilities are located in the canyon. Please pack toilet paper/napkins in case supplies are low and hand sanitizing wipes as there are no handwashing stations.
**NO PETS ALLOWED on canyon tours (per Navajo Parks and Recreation policy). However, we do observe ADA guidelines regarding service dogs, which are allowed on 4x4/SUV tours only. Be sure to pack doggie bags for their waste. Please call or email us so that we can plan accordingly. Your service dog will have to be declared when obtaining your Backcountry Permit with the Navajo Parks and Rec prior to entering the canyon.
Cancellation Policy
You may cancel your reservation for a full refund 48 hours before your tour.
However, there is a $75.00 cancellation fee if you cancel your tour within 48 hours or if you don't show up. If you'd like to reschedule your tour for a later date or time, please call to discuss.
Should inclement weather occur, Canyon de Chelly Tours reserves the right to cancel your tour for safety reasons and a refund will be issued via payment type. We can also offer a rim tour with a guide at a reduced rate and the remaining balance refunded per your payment type.
