Description: Join us on the waters encircling Manhattan for a comprehensive examination of how climate change is reshaping our skyline, shoreline and infrastructure. We host the AIANY Climate Change and Architecture Tour aboard the Yacht Manhattan or Manhattan II where sweeping views of NYC’s skyline are examined through the lens of sustainability, waterfront resilience and the changing political priorities of our time.

We will explore how climate change is affecting our city and people, and the actions NYC is taking to mitigate our emissions of greenhouse gases, enhance the design of the built environment and improve the health of our ecosystems.

We will see projects that exemplify the collaboration of architects, landscape architects, urban planners, engineers, community groups and others to bring the design and construction of resiliency projects and sustainable buildings to fruition.

On this year’s AIANY Climate Change and Architecture Tour, we will See:

  • The volume of sustainable building projects skyrocket in NYC as we seek to decarbonize the built environment.
  • Substantial progress on the elevation of shoreline parks and neighborhoods to better contend with rising sea levels and increased storm surges.
  • City and state projects focused on transitioning to renewable energy sources, the fortification of our transportation infrastructure, and the management of extended heat waves and droughts.
  • The Third Avenue Swing Bridge on the Harlem River that -- stuck in an open position for three hours last year due to a heat wave.
  • Where fires broke out in the New Jersey Palisades and northern Manhattan due to drought conditions.
  • Governors Island, where the New York Climate Exchange will be built.

What is Included: - 2.75 hour tour that fully circumnavigates Manhattan
- We will cruise by green buildings, sustainable parks, renewable energy sites, post-Superstorm Sandy flood walls and resiliency measures, recycling plants and the future home of an offshore wind turbine assembly pier!
- Hosted & narrated by American Institute of Architects' member, Doug Fox
- Captivating stories and innovative projects that highlight how New York City is addressing climate change on multiple fronts and confronting pressing challenges that must be solved immediately
- Offered aboard Manhattan or Manhattan II (1920s inspired yachts)
- Elegant tables assigned in a climate-controlled salon. Each table features cushioned seating, and a large operable exterior window.
- One complimentary beer, wine, Champagne or soft drink is offered. Additional beverages are available for purchase

What is not Included: - Guarantee of a full circumnavigation of Manhattan is not included. On rare occasions, the Spuyten Duyvil train bridge is inoperable and cannot open for us to pass through. We will accommodate such cases with a tour that features a double backing of the route and further detail of the waterfront sites.

- Food is not included. A variety of light bites can be added on to your online ticket purchase. A limited number of these snack options will also be available onboard. Credit cards are the only form of payment accepted at this time. We ask that if bringing food that it is kept to a simple, light snack.
Highlights: - Experience numerous examples of sustainable buildings in New York City that adhere to the LEED and Passive House standards -- reducing their carbon footprint, conserving natural resources and creating healthier living environments.
- Consider how tens of thousands of buildings in New York City have to comply with NYC's ambitious climate change legislation Local Law 97 that requires reduced use of fossil fuels and energy-efficiency retrofits.
- Examine specific challenges faced by low-income neighborhoods and communities of color that often contend with a larger range of environmental and health threats than wealthier neighborhoods.
- Delve into competing approaches for how NYC should best protect itself from future Hurricanes: Massive flood walls with movable gates at the entrances to the harbor and rivers? Barriers along shorelines? Embrace nature-based solutions?
- See completed and under-construction coastal resiliency projects as we travel along the Lower East Side, Battery Park City and other neighborhoods.
- Learn about Superstorm Sandy & Hurricane Ida and their impacts on New York City.
- See up-close how our recycling system operates in New York City through marine transfer stations, barges and resource recovery facilities.
