Discover the hidden gems of the James River Park System! We'll visit all of the top spots in the park, including the popular Belle Isle and Buttermilk Trail, as well as the lesser-known (but most incredible) Pipeline Walk. We'll see old train bridge ruins, rapids, and Civil-War era infrastructure while feeling lost in nature right in the heart of downtown Richmond.
Our route is almost entirely flat over dirt paths, with a couple flights of stairs in total, as well as a short stretch of rocky terrain. A medium level of fitness is required.
Be sure to bring water and comfortable shoes!

Additional Info
Hello!
This is Alex from Discover Richmond Tours, and I'm so glad you'll be hiking the James River with us! Below are some helpful tips for our hike:
MOST IMPORTANT:
- Bring your own water and snacks! Your guide will not be carrying water for everyone. Note: there is NOT a convenient location on-site to fill water bottles, so bring water with you.
- Dress appropriately for the weather - rain gear, layers, sunscreen, bug protection, etc.
Meeting location:
We will meet at the paved sidewalk trailhead leaving the Manchester Climbing Wall parking lot (click that link). If the parking lot is full, you'll have to look for on-street parking in the area.
Note: Google Maps says the parking lot address is 599 W. 11th St. while Apple Maps simply says US-60 E. For that reason, you should definitely click the link above, which drops a pin on Google Maps directly.
Please give yourself plenty of time to find parking, as we will be departing right on time!
Other Things To Know:
- Please wear comfortable, sturdy shoes - we'll be walking about 4.5 miles. The terrain will be mostly flat dirt paths, but there will be rocky stretches, some stairs, and even a short ladder to climb.
- Gratuities for your tour guide are not required, but definitely appreciated for a job well done.
- Come ready to have fun and Discover Richmond!
Weather
Some light rain can make for an enjoyable walk with the right clothing! But in case of heavy rain or inclement weather, we will reschedule or cancel and provide a refund.
Planning Your Trip:
I want you to know that we are happy to help you plan your trip to Richmond beyond your tour. You're more than welcome to reply to this email asking for tips on anything from where else to eat and drink, what to see, and which activities you should try. Or you can check out our Richmond Guide, which has all sorts of articles on Richmond's best restaurants, neighborhoods, and events. Find that here: http://www.discoverrichmondtours.com/richmond-va-city-guide/
We can't wait to meet you!
