- Did you know? During World War II, Katz’s Deli was on a mission to send salamis to troops overseas to give them a taste of home, and this popular slogan was born; “Send a salami to your boy in the army!”
- Did you know? Hundreds of small bagel bakeries, mostly in basements, once inhabited the Lower East Side. Today Kossar’s Bialys still remains on Grand Street and continues to bake on premises today.

Important Notice: Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time. The tour will not wait for guests who are late. Since the tour will take place both inside and outside, be sure to dress for the weather and bring a light jacket or sweater if you get chilly. We strongly encourage you to wear comfortable walking shoes and feel free to bring a bottle of water. Please don’t bring luggage or big bulky bags since we will not have a place to store them and they can be distracting during the tour.
Meeting Location: The tour starts at Yonah Shimmels Bakery on East Houston Street in between Eldridge st and Forsyth St. You can use the GPS address of 137 E. Houston Street, New York, NY (10002). You will meet your tour guide right outside of the bakery. If you are late or lost please call (347) 931-7676. We strongly discourage you from driving because parking can be unreliable, but there is a garage located at 22 E 1st Street.
What to Wear
- We strongly encourage you to wear comfortable walking shoes since we will be standing for the entire tour.
- Dress appropriately for the weather because we will be outside.
What to Bring/What Not to Bring
- You may want to bring a camera to capture memorable moments to share with your friends.
- Consider bringing a light jacket or sweater since it can be chilly indoors.
- Don't bring heavy or bulky items because they can become a nuisance after carrying for a long period of time.
- No alcohol is permitted on the tour.
Other Tips & Guidelines
- Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. The tour will not wait for guests who are late.
- Please consider your current level of physical ability when preparing for the tour. The route is handicap accessible and the tour moves at a leisurely pace.
Cancellation Policy
Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded and cannot be rescheduled within 48 hours of the scheduled tour because your space is being guaranteed at the event.
The activity runs regardless of weather conditions. In the rare situation where the seller is forced to cancel the event, ticket-holders will be allowed to reschedule to another time (subject to availability).
