Forecast Call:
Our Aurora Team will be in touch with your forecast on the date you have your tour booked between 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Should conditions be overwhelmingly unlikely to be successful, we will work with you during that call to reschedule your tour, based on availability.
You must respond to our forecast call via return call or text message by 5:30 pm. If we have a waitlist and you haven't confirmed by 5:30 pm, your seats will be released and you will be considered a no show. Please keep this in mind if you have a flight arrival the day of your first night of forecast and will be in the air between 3:00 - 5:00 pm Alaska time.
Forecasts are based on cloud cover, and moon brightness. The aurora strength and brightness are mostly dependent on the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). The IMF constantly fluctuates and can only be known once the solar wind is detected by the DSCOVR satellite. These values are received a maximum of 30-90 minutes before arriving to our atmosphere. For this reason we will be unable to predict how strong and bright will be during your phone call. Our aim is to get our guests in the most ideal spot for if/when elevated conditions arrive.
Prepare for your forecast call
If you have an international phone number without local mobile service, please enable Wi-Fi calling* on your phone. This will allow you to receive our forecast call as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi.
Here's what to expect during your forecast call:
- Confirm all order details and duration of stay in Alaska. These details will help us create a personalized forecast for your group.
- Discussion of general weather patterns and moon phase during your visit.
- Forecast for that night's conditions.
- Personalized recommendations based on your group's expectations and availability.
What to Wear
- Our Aurora tours operate from late August until April. Check temperatures in Fairbanks before you leave home to bring the necessary clothing. Fairbanks is known to have some of the world's coldest temperatures in winter. Please be prepared.
- Our tours typically go to our cabin about 30 minutes outside of Fairbanks. You can warm up inside the cabin or in our warming yurts. In the event that the weather is cloudy over our cabin we will chase clear skies to view the Aurora. We'll use our vans as a mobile warming unit.
- Dress in layers, including base layers, mid-layers, and heavy outerwear. Aurora viewing is not an active pastime. You'll be standing outside looking at the sky, at night.
- Wear insulated winter boots and wear two pairs of socks. Wool is the best. During much of the winter, the ground is covered with snow and ice.
- A winter hat and gloves are recommended most of the year. You may also want disposable hand warmers.
Winter gear packages can be rented from outfitters in Fairbanks. Some offer delivery to your hotel.
Please Note
- Gratuity is NOT included in the tour price and it is appreciated!
- Hotel pick-up is available at Fairbanks hotel locations only and NOT available for private residences (ie Airbnb or VRBO) or at Alyeska Resort. If staying at one of these locations, our office will reach out to confirm pick up location.
